It is a good game but not as good as silent hill or Resident Evil.29196

Virus from Mesquite, Texas says (4/Aug/2003):
I will have to agree that the game is not all that well in terms of game play, but the storyline is pretty entertaining and keeps you thinking. Yes, I admit I would rather have more guns and have to deal with chasing the things around with a flashlight through half the game. I would give it a 7 for the fact that i have played every Resident Evil game to Date and will always collect everyone one of their games as long as I have money. Silent Hill is better than this game on storyline because of the twist halfway through the game. I would say RENT AND NOT BUY! The graphics are really good as are the cutscenes. The sound is one of the best I've heard in a game. It is pretty fun as you play it for the first time as both characters. It does take a bit of time to beat luckily. I will say it is original as of story line but not of the setting, I mean a dark mansion with creatures everywhere COME ON GIVE ME A TRAIN OR SOMETHING SOMEWHERE. But I think the price for the game is a little much even for a two disc game.

Good fun- an easier Resident Evil22862

A gamer from Brighton, U.K says (4/May/2003):
I started the game as Alene- she begins in the mansion, with a torch and a radio; and meets an old woman in an attic bedroom who hints at the horrors. It is at first really good; dark passages, weird monsters, and creepy music. Soon, it becomes apparent, that like Resident Evil mansions, there are loads of corridors and stairs, yet few rooms: in this, there is no dining room, no living room, four bedrooms only, no bathroom even! So, someone built a huge mansion, yet just wanted corridor, after corridor, few windows, and some junk rooms? It is unrealistic here; the only good bit of realism, is the use of light switches-it is scary, when you have to run across a dark room to hit the light switch, to dispel the monsters. The gardens are fun, as they are realistic, and quite sprawling in their size. Next, the fort- really eerie, as it is dark, and has loads of creatures waiting to pounce on you. Finally, the world of darkness, or whatever- endless rambling caverns, of endlessly regenerating monsters to zap with some weird gun- not frightening, just dull; and the ending? Short, and frankly, a bit of a let down.
Next, I played Carnaby- it was fun to see where his paths cross with Alene- you start in the gardens, and are basically just behind in the game; she gained a start, by beginning in the mansion. However, there is the same world of darkness at the end-just more of it!
The music is great- creepy and jumpy, and there is a wide variety of pieces playing. The graphics are great for the Playstation, with realistic backgrounds, and the characters move as if they were real. In terms of gameplay, once you have played it once, you probably won't be replaying in a hurry- there is no Resident Evil unlimited rocket launchers, or mini games to gain. However the game is quite long in itself, and with two different people to play, it is entertaining for a few weeks of fun. The storyline develops well, and the cut-scenes are plentiful, and the story is for once well thought of; the characters are not annoying, and you want to see what will happen to them.
For £10 it was a good deal- more than just another survival horror, as it has a few little extras: a cool torch, some good puzzles, realistic voice acting (no "Thanks, Barry!"[I was just about to be crushed to death by a ceiling, but am acting as if I'm really happy]), and no old typewriters, conveniently placed around! Instead, charms of saving- not as good as saving when you want, but at least you are not forced to save in a certain place. However, the same unrealistic mansion design, and dissapointingly short ending. All in all, fun, a good difficulty level, and addictive.

Same old gets old22862

Newbobble from Birmingham UK says (10/Mar/2003):
The graphics in this game are superb, that can not be doubted,as indeed are the cut animations sounds - unfortunately that doesn't make a great game. The freezing between scenes and delays on loading are intolerable and the game controls just too clunky. Add to that a gameplay which involves more running away that confrontation and you've got a game that is infuriating slow, annoying and boring - rent don't buy!

Very involved, and Gripping!17822

Brad Kells from Gayndah, Queensland, Australia says (18/Feb/2003):
I have yet to beat the game but from what I have played I have been very pleased with it. Example the graphics are second to none and the sound effects are very chilling (especially at 2 in the morning). I like how the game makes you use all of your senses in trying to unravel the mystery which lurks on shadow island. The characters were very well thought out because you can choose from two different people which come from 2 very different lifestyles and to see what their reaction is to the monsters and the strange and elusive people on shadow island. I give this game 8/10 because it is a very entertaining way to spend a week.

Scary as ol Heck7468

Jeremy Russell from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada. says (24/May/2002):
When I first started playing the game I thought, "Hey, this is just gonna be another Resident Evil wannabe game," but after playing it for a couple of hours I was like, "This is such a cool game." The graphics are really good. The sound gives an eerie, very scary feeling. It's like, you will be doing one thing, then all of a sudden, demons or monsters will just appear from nowhere in a flash of lightning. I love the concept of choosing between 2 characters from the first go. Either choose the guy and start in the woods, or choose the chick and start in the mansion. I reccomend this game to anyone who likes Resident Evil or Silent Hill.
